Introduction to the Education Department of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO

Education is the basis of human development. It is a tool for achieving sustainable development. Economic growth and development in societies depends on the countries’ capacities in educating their nationals. Education brings riches to cultures. It enables mutual understanding and sets the ground for the establishment of peaceful societies. UNESCO considers education as a human right and the main factor in the full development of any individuals’ capacities.
The activities of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO in the Education Sector are depicted in line with the main objectives of providing quality education for all and lifelong learning and the three strategic objectives defined in the Medium-term Strategy for 2014-2021, including: 1) Supporting Member States to develop education systems to foster high quality and inclusive lifelong learning for all; 2) Empowering learners to be creative and responsible global citizens; and 3) Advancing education for all (EFA) and shaping the future international education agenda.
The activities of the Education Department of the NatCom are extensive and defined in line with the objectives and commitments depicted in international instruments, including various conventions, recommendations, and action plans in education, as well as national priorities and realities.
Lifelong learning, quality literacy education, gender equality, TVET, higher education, strategies related to teachers and their professional development, reforming and innovating educational systems, peace and human rights education, integrating Education for Sustainable Development into the national educational plan, health education and HIV/AIDS prevention, global citizenship education, Education for Sustainable Development  and promoting healthy life styles are among the most important activities of the Education Department of the Iran-NatCom.
Additionally, in line with the above-mentioned three strategic objectives and in view of a holistic approach, the Education Department of the Iran-NatCom seeks to implement the main lines of action of the 2014-2017 action plan, which aims at advancing education for Sustainable Development and peace, guided by respecting the right to education, improving gender equality and social inclusion in education, improving the quality of teaching and learning, and supporting the link between education and the world of work.
In accordance with the priorities of the Medium-Term Strategy in Education and the Education 2030 framework for action, the Education Department of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO works to localise UNESCO’s education programmes and objectives in the Country based on a comprehensive approach, which focuses on coordinating the activities of all education stakeholders and promoting national solidarity and dialogue among them for promoting education for peace and sustainable development. This is done by emphasising the principles of observing the right to education, enhancing social inclusion and access to education, improving the quality of education and empowering all national stakeholders.
