Introduction to the Communication and Information Department of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO
Information and Communication Technologies and the media are the main tools providing widespread access to knowledge, enabling their extensive dissemination in the developing world. UNESCO’s approach to communication and information is to use these technologies to create knowledge societies and to counter emerging social challenges.
The Communication and Information Department of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO has put the focus of its activities on the Strategic Objectve 9 of the Medium-Term Strategy for 2014-2021 that deals with promoting freedom of expression, media development and universal access to information and knowledge. In this framework, the CI Department works to strengthen relevant infrastructures and develop the media, build capacities for reviving and reforming media services, with special emphasis on respecting professional and ethical standards in these areas and improve national public access to means of communication and knowledge to promote e-learning and open educational resources. Additionally, the CI Department seeks to preserve knowledge for the future generations by preserving documentary heritage. In these trends, the CI Department closely cooperates with the civil society, the private sector, NGOs, professional organisations and important entities that work in the area of Information and Communication Technologies.
